Garnets, having always been considered the "Mother Gem" of the Czech lands, are becoming more and more rare in their original form. One can find garnets from far eastern regions of the world, but the "motherland" of the gems recently announced her depleted sources. The exquisite garnet necklace presented in was made in the early years of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia in 1919. The garnets are all original and securely rest in their settings of 900 silver with 14K gold overlay. 5 separate segments of graduated settings are anchored along the center of the necklace in a space of 2". The center segment of 4 gems reaches toward the right and left ones of 3 each and these reach out to the last segment of 1. From the 4 garnet center segment, a layered circle of 9 garnets surrounding a larger center one...extends. Each setting was solidly created to encase the rare dark red gemstones. The back of each setting is air-gated to allow the entrance of a tiny amount of refractionary. The effect is dazzling and these old rare garnets can change their hues from a deep vintage red to a slight dark orange shade ...all dependent on the light of day or dazzle of night's reflected lights. Necklace closes with its hallmarked spring clasp and loop. Each segment of the necklace is also hallmarked. Hallmarks include the rabbit's head turned left and the number "3" for 900 silver; the "900" mark; the "G" for gold overlay; and "JB" for the silversmith. End to end measurement of necklace is 18". Today in Prague you may find many imitations of the design and style of this necklace, but the chance of finding one from 1919 with its original garnet gemstones precisely chisled from that era are slim to nil. The necklace that once graced the neck of a most gracious lady in the the center's old section of Prague has witnessed many a splendid occassion and has been only resting.....awaiting the ones of a new century ahead.
