Garnets, having always been considered the "Mother Gem" of the Czech lands, are becoming more and more rare in their original form. One can find garnets from far eastern regions of the world, but the "motherland" of the gems recently announced her depleted sources. The exquisite girandole shaped necklace and matching earrings presented in were made in the early years of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia in 1919. The garnets are all original and securely rest in their settings of 925 silver. Exquisitely designed by a notable Bohemian silversmith at the height of the Art Nouveau Period , the elegant flowing pattern of the necklace and earrings contains all the unique traits of that exclusive artistic time. The fine silver threads of the chain extend 8" on each side and are soldered within the edges of the top of the girandole setting which measures 1 1/2"across and 2" in length. Three pear cut garnets of 3/8"x 1/4" are each crowed with fine overlaid silver chase cut leaves . The same leaves extend from the top round garnet toward the two outlying ones. Detail of this necklace can only be described by the photos... as a picture is worth a thousand words. (Just wish photos could justify the brilliant beauty) Matching earrings are of the same exact design and garnet sizes of necklace. The lovely open worked ring surrounding each garnet, dips inward toward the bottom area and is also chase cut in same pattern as the crowning leaves. Earrings measure 1 1/2" in length and are 1/2" across at widest area. Several unique features should be pointed out with this set. One feature is the type of wire loop . This one is actually shaped in an angled edge...unlike most that are rounded. The hinged clasp fits securely over the narrow flat edge. Another most outstanding feature is the COLOUR . Bohemian garnets are usually a very deep red, but of course do change hue depending on light. These garnets are very old and rare and possess an orange mandarin hue when in sunlight. These are often referred to as "spessartite" garnets and in today's world, are usually found only in synthetic form. Hallmarks of "925" for silver content and the rabbit's head to the left with the number 3 in the cartouche nd the silversmith's initials are found on earring loops, edges of necklace and clasp and receiving loop. The settings of these pieces measure 1/8" in depth and the detail is remarkable given the period of time and the unsophisticated tools of that day. Each garnet in the necklace and earrings has open back settings, except for the solid back ones at earring loop and the small dangling one in the girandole's center. Impeccably well kept for nearly a century. EXCELLENT FLAWLESS CONDITION. Never has an occassion felt so glamorous as the one you will embark upon wearing this heirloom set. Scarlett herself would envy you! So, yes..Go With the Wind! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Today in Prague you may find many imitations of the design and style of this set, but the chance of finding one from 1919 with its original garnet gemstones precisely chiseled from that era are slim to nil. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Seller charges a flat fee of $6.50 for airmail, certified and insured postage and handling. Final price includes all taxes.
