To lock ... to latch ... to hide away. The word itself found its way into the English language centuries ago ~ derived from the French "loquet" ~ and has never tarried from its cherished expression.
The one presented in was hand tooled in the 1880's in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The irresistible charm of design from the Jugendstil period enhances its entirety with delicate roses and leaves intricately chase worked about the borders and offset with a tiny beaded edge which bevels upward and flat across the 1" diameter of the locket . Within the rectangular cartouche ... to one side of bail loop is the "800" silver hallmark and opposite, the silversmith's mark within a curved edge one . Faint hallmarks of the crescent moon and Austrian imperial crown are upon the front edges of the bail as well as upon the nail slip opening section at 10 o'clock. Hallmarks and design date the item to the mid to late 1880's. The locket itself is merely 1" in diameter, but the accented floral border seems to enlarge the dimension. A wafer-thin 1/8" in depth, the surprising find is that within the stepped down sections, enough space allows two photos to be securely set with their gold toned gasket frames. Inside of frames remains the original old celluloid photo covers ... remarkably in perfect uncracked condition. Simple and elegant, the rote cut ruby spinel positions itself at 6 o'clock. Sparkling with a glow of confident endearment of her secrets tucked within, she has remained in that solitary position for well over a century. The ornamental detail of the locket is a exquisite example of design and technique of the era ~ chase-cut leaves and raised roses with empire beaded edges. Back side is entirely simple ... of slightly arched silver edges which joins the opposite side by winged edge hinge at one end and its perfect hitch- into-lock at other. Without scratches or dents, the locket was an heirloom of 4 generations which was tenderly cared for and rarely used. The satin like finish of backside could easily be accented with a monogram or initials ... or even a line of prose. You may contact me for engraving and fonts type if so desiring. In impeccable original condition, this precious Jugendstil locket is only awaiting another set of memories to be secured within her locked windows. From the heart of old world Europe to a shore unknown, the locket will live on ... only the memories within kept in-check and locked ... by that brilliant knowing little glow at 6 o'clock.
