VINTAGE ART NOUVEAU STERLING REPOUSSE POCKET KNIFE This handsome sterling silver repoussé pocket knife is in excellent condition. The knife is decorated with two bearded and horned devil heads, scrolls and a floral garland motif in a mirror image. T is a simple center medallion that anchors the design. The detail is excellent, particularly on the devilâe(tm)s faces and beards. The quality and design is reminiscent of the work done by Unger Bros. and William B Kerr (both from Newark, New Jersey) during the same period. The schema is on the front and reverse sides of the pocket knife. It has three folding blades and a file. The original patina remains on the piece. The outside casing of the pocket knife is marked âeoesterlingâe. Coincidentally, each blade is also marked "Sterling", along with a four-leaf clover. This is the hallmark of the Howard Sterling Company (although the blades are marked Sterling, they are actually carbon steel). One blade has a chip at the tip. T is no play in the blades and the blades are tight. In addition, the spring action on each blade is good, both opening and closing. To ensure accuracy and clarification, on one side of the knife t are two minute dents, one at each end, in the sterling. The blemishes are noticeable in our photographs because of the use of magnification. The imperfections do not hinder the integrity and the overall appearance of the knife. The pocketknife measures 3 1/8âe in length, 5/8âe in width and 3/16âe in thickness. The assorted blades measure 1âe, 1 3/8âe, 1 7/8âe, and 1 5/16âe. The Howard Sterling company was founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1878 to produce plated jewelry. In 1886, a sterling silver wear department was added and manufactured under the title The Sterling Company. The company went out of business by 1902. Some of the patterns and dies were sold to the Roger Williams Silver Company and others. We will not accept bids from bidders who have no feedback.
