Up for auction is a charming portrait of an attractive young woman by the artist Arthur Nicholson Colt (1889-1972). Based on the clothing and hair it was most likely painted in the 1930s-1940s. I is in good condition for a 70 year old painting with no tears, water damage, mold or paint loss. The painting measures 16" x 20". I have placed it in a frame for two of the pics to show how it would look framed. Please note that the frame is not part of the auction. Below is a biography of the artist from the Museum of Wisconsin Art: Arthur Nicholson Colt Born in 1889 Ottumwa, Iowa Died 1972 in Madison, Wisconsin Arthur Colt was a portrait painter and educator in Madison, Wisconsin. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and in Paris (despite the regional preference for study in Germany). He taught in the University of Wisconsin - Madison Art Department and ran summer art colonies at Black River in Sheboygan, Devil's Lake and Gills Rock in Door County. He was a member of the Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors and a (WPA) Works Progress Administration artist in the Federal Works of Art Project in 1933-1934.. He founded the Colt School of Art in 1926, which was noted for its instruction in the colorist style, and was its director until 1966, building a reputation as a colorist and realist painter.
