We are pleased to offer this exceptional portrait, circa 1910, showing a beautiful young woman, by Arthur W Woelfle (1893 - 1936) , ANA. The painting is oil on board measuring 18 x 14 inches having overall framed dimensions 24" x 20". The painting is signed WOELFLE at the lower left, and is in excellent condition, having been cleaned and conserved. This painting features a beautiful 'Neopolitan' woman, done in Art Nouveau / Impressionist style. She has brown eyes and dark hair, long braids, a head-dress and purple feather earings, suggesting she is ready for an evening out. The overall composition is fine and skillful: the perimeter brushwork is thick and dramatically impastoed, and tends toward the use of primary colors. Closer to the center of the painting, the brushwork becomes extremely fine, and shows the face with near photographic precision. The perimeter coloration and impasto contrasts with the subject's smooth complexion and deliberate gaze. The viewer's attention comes to rest at the face (framed by the hand), and in turn the cool face and eyes are turned directly back toward the viewer. A very good technical portrait that is also very pleasing to view. The painting has been cleaned and conserved. The period, hand-carved, gilded frame is in original condition with minor abrasions: the old presentation mat has been replaced with a new one. This is a fine period painting by an Associate of the National Academy, showing a beautiful woman, exuberant coloration, and high technical competence. Framed and Ready to hang! ( Woelfle was known to paint landscapes in Provincetown and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and small (8" x 10") paintings of Cape Cod have sold to $4,000 at auction. The painting offered here is certainly larger than, and we would argue superior to the smaller Provincetown landscapes we have seen...). Biography : Arthur William Woelfle was born in Trenton, NJ. Studied at the Brooklyn Institute; theArt Students' League under John Twachtman and Kenyon Cox, and in Paris and Munich. Member of National Arts Club, New York; National Academy of Design; Allied Artists of America; Grand Central Art Galleries; Salamagundi Club; Art Institute of Chicago; Salons of America; the Boston Art Club. Awarded Figure prize, Allied Artists of America, and Adolph Grant and Irvin Hanson Prizes. Regular exhibitor at leading exhibitions. The "new court house" in Youngstown, Ohio, has a mural 125 feet long, done by Woelfle, and ten portraits of Ohio judges. Listed in Who was Who in American Art. Woelfle lived in Erie, Pennsylvania around the turn of the century, exhibiting there between 1899 and 1905. Public Library. doing murals and portraits in the Youngstown, Ohio area. He held several teaching positions, incluiding Essex Falls, New Jersey; Tarrytown, New York; at the Mechanics Institute and the Grand Central School of Art, both in New York City. In the latter position he taught classes in portrait and figure painting for eight years. In 1928 the Erie Art Club honored him with a joint exhibit along with George Elmer Browne. That same year he won the Grant prize from the New Rochelle Art Association. Further awards came in 1929 with a silver medal and figure prize from the Allied Artists of America; in 1934 with a first place in the New Jersey Annual Art Show at the Montclair Art Museum, and in 1935 with a medal awarded by the National Arts Club of which he was a life member.
