Artificial Horizon made by Whyte Thompson & Co. in Glasgow, well known makers of navigation instruments. It provides a horizontal wire to view through the telescope when no sea horizon is available. T is a pendulum inside the wedge-shaped object, which is a damping chamber intended to be filled with oil. The sighting wire is adjustable, up and down, with a knurled thumbscrew. The other knurled thumbscrew on the side is for clamping the pendulum when the instrument is not in use. The spherical polished brass object at the end of the lever is a counterweight. The side of the damping chamber is engraved "Whyte Thompson & Co. Makers Glasgow", and the side of the frame is engraved "Murray's Patent". The workmanship is excellent, as would be expected from this maker. Condition is also excellent, with the original colored lacquer intact. T is no corrosion anyw on it. The instrument is 5 inches long and weighs 13 ounces. Shipping in the lower 48 States $6 priority mail.
