Offered for sale is this rare original artificial horizon that is based on the pendulum principal. It dates from the last decade of the 1800's It was made by Whyte Thomson & Co., Glasgow Scotland, and is based on Murray's Patent of 1893. The device is to be used with an instrument that measures the altitude of a heavenly body, sun, star or planet. We have seen a photo of one of these mounted on a sextant. Pendulum artificial horizons date back to about the 1780's. The designs were based on the idea that a sight vane attached to a freely swinging pendulum would provide a horizontal reference line and form a horizon. In the Murray design, a weight at the fulcrum, acts as a counter balance. This rare item is in very good condition showing only minor signs of age and use. The horizon wire is present. The wooden case with sliding lid is in very good condition. T is a brass strip included that we are not sure if it is meant to go with this device but it was in the box when we obtained it through a local estate. Whyte Thomson & Co is said to have started operations in the last decade of the 19th century. They had offices on Hope Street in Glasgow, Scotland. They are listed in Webster's Registry of Nautical Instrument Makers and were noted for their Chronometers. T is an example of this device in the book on nautical instruments "Taking the Stars" by Peter Ifland. The total length of this wonderful antique is 9 1/4 inches. Total length of the wooden case is 10 inches. Please check our photos for exact shape and condition. Please check Seller's Other Items for more vintage items. Sorry NO PAYPAL on this item. Please e-mail any questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for looking.
