These chairs were designed by George Montague Ellwood (1875-1955) and were made and retailed by John Sollie Henry (founded c1880) of Old Street, London. Ellwood was educated at Holloway Art School and in 1897 won the gold medal for his furniture designs for the National Competition, Kensington. In 1899 he became one of the founding members of the 'Guild of Art Craftsmen' based at Camden Square, London. They were a working brotherhood of Artists and craftsmen. And held regular exhibitions of t work. He was the editor of Drawing and Design and in later years wrote several books on drawing, design and advertising. Circa 1900-1906 Ellwood was an in-house designer for the retailer J. S. Henry along with other designers such as G. Walton, W. A. S. Benson, C.F.A Voysey, E. G. Punnett and W. J. Neatby. Ellwood seemed to be their most prolific designer; his designs for them were exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exhibition and won a silver medal, one of two the firm were awarded. Last, black and white picture shows a similar chair sold at Sotheby's London on 22 nd Feb 2006 for 5,040 GBP, this example is made from unstained sycamore. Other examples were made in walnut, green stained sycamore and oak with pewter and copper inlay. Another example of the chair is in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum, Florida.
