DESCRIPTION This auction is for a fabulous Circa 1900 quarter sawn oak tailor's mirror. This is a large piece (see measurements below) with a center mirror set in a sturdy oak frame with a rotating metal mount at the top and bottom which allow it to swivel around the vertical axis. The two side mirrors are only slightly smaller and swing back and forth freely within decorative articulated metal frames which I believe to be bronze. I cannot be sure of that but when I rub them they do not have the distinctive brass smell and I believe brass would not be structurally strong enough to hold them. In addition to the ability to swing the two side mirrors all the way to the front so that the whole piece is folded in on itself, each side mirror rotates on the vertical axis just like the center mirror. This type of triple mirror was commonly referred to as a tailor's mirror because it was possible to view yourself from front, back, and side simultaneously in order to determine the fit and attractiveness of items of clothing. T is a rectangular crest piece across the top which is carved in a beaded pattern which was common at the time. The two side columns are nicely reeded and have a simple Ionic style carving at the top. The base consists of two elegantly shaped supports each set on a wider flat piece which normally has 4 shaped feet attached. I currently do not have the feet on it due to the low ceiling of my sewing room. I have included a picture of one of the feet to give you an idea of what it looks like. Each mirror is made of very heavy glass with good optical quality and a wide (nearly 1 inch) bevel all around. CONDITION The condition of the piece is very good to excellent with the quarter sawn oak having its original finish and a beautiful mellow patina that can only be achieved through age. T is one place at the top w the bronze mount has worn away a small groove in the edge of the decorative element at the top of one of the columns. Of course the base has the usual rubs and minor dings that would be expected of a piece this age coming in contact with people's shoes over the years and the feet, which are currently not attached, have screw holes which have been wallowed out over the many years and have been filled with wood filler. However, when they are attached this is not visible as it is on the bottom. The only part of this piece that is not original are the two rotating supports attached to the back that support the center mirror. When I got the piece they each had serious stress fractures and were replaced with appropriately colored steel pieces manufactured by a friend of mine whose wood and metalworking skills are exceptional. I have included a picture of this. Each of the mirrors has minor darkening of the silvering on the back but as you can see from the pictures the optical quality of the glass is excellent and t are no scratches or cracks. PROVENANCE I acquired this mirror about 14 years ago at an antique store in Pasadena , California , home of the Arts and Crafts movement in America . It came from an exclusive men's store in the wealthy community of nearby San Marino that had been in business since about 1890 or before and had finally decided to do some remodeling and update their store. This is a totally unique piece of furniture and I hate to part with it but I have had to accept that it is just too large for my sewing room. MEASUREMENTS Total Height (without feet) 74"Middle mirror57" x 25"Side mirrors (each)52" x 22"Feet(height)4" SHIPPING This mirror is large and heavy. I would estimate it weighs approximately 150 to 175 pounds. It comes apart into three pieces. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. I have included the contact info of a couple of antique movers that I have used successfully in the past for your convenience. You are welcome to use any company you choose.
