This book, at least, preserves through photographs and text the rich and varied crafts and arts of Syria's past.Syria is a colorful mosaic of many cultures (Arab, Kurds, Armenians, Turks, nomads) and religions (Muslim, Christian, and Jewish). Together they have created an amazing variety of crafts, textiles, jewelry, pottery, and carpets. There are over 600 illustration and photographs with explanatory text in the book.Chapters in this book, The Arts and Crafts of Syria are authored by Johannes Kalter, head of the Oriental Dept. at the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, Germany; Margareta Pavaloi, an expert on ethnology and Islam, also of the Linden Museum; and Maria Zerrnickel, an art historian at the same museum . First published in Great Briton in 1992. This volume was published in 1993 by Thames and Hudson Inc., New York in 1993. It was printed and bound by Staib and Mayer, Stuttgart, Germany.
