ON June 10-14, 1901 at Sotheby , WilKinson Hodge sold in London the late Earl of Ashburnham's fine Barrois collection of illuminated manuscripts, the G28 lots."The magnificent Ashburnham library commenced in 1814, when a Westminster schoolboy bought for one and sixpence a copy of the Secrets of Albertus Magnus , is now a thing of the past, as the present Earl (the fifth of his line) has nothing more to sell." ASHBURNHAM SALE. The Barrois Manuscripts, the Last of the Earl's Magnificent Acquisitions. The first part of the library, sold in June. 1897; the second part, sold in December; and the third part, May, 18. The total was a little reduced, however, by a later sain of books returned because of imperfections and other reasons, but it was not seriously affected. On May 1, 1889, a part of the manuscripts, known as the "Appendix," sold at auction, this included the Bramhall manuscript of the Wycliffe Bible, and was one of the Earl's last purchases. Several months before Messrs. Sotheby sold privately the beautiful " Evangelia Quatuor," whose binding is studded with precious stones-one of the finest of the Ashburnham manuscripts. This summary does not include the Stowe collection, which the Earl secured many years before and sold, it is said, to the British Museum. The Barrois collection was the result of the labors of a man who, in France, was as accomplished a book thief as Libri was. In Italy, with a few precious things, Libri's aspirations knew no bounds. He was Deputy lor Lille before the Revolution of 1848, and was a distinguished scholar and book lover. Originally the collection included 702 manuscripts, among them many fine old texts of I'rench romances and poems. In 1848 it was offered to the British Museum, but the transaction fell through, and Ashburnham bought it en bloc. Later Leopold Dclisle proved that about one-tenth of the manuscripts had been stolen from French libraries. American, English, and Continental collectors were represented at the sale by such prominent agents as B. F. Stevens, Bernard Quariteh (the younger.) EHia Elvey, S. C. Cockrell. Belin of Paris. Baer of Frankfort, and others. The British Museum secured a number of fine things, and Fairfax Murray, the English bibliophile, added many of the best manuscripts to his notable library. The highest price was given by "Mr. Archer," (announced as a private collector,) for a fourteenth century manuscript of "San Graal et Lancelot du Lac" in three volumes, written on 383 leaves, and containing thirty-nine splendidly painted and richly illuminated miniatures and initials (Lot 587).(For completed auction prices - go to ) Vintage Books Are Great Gifts for Collectors, Students, Teachers, and Professionals!
