This is an average-sized nest of the lesser banded hornet Vespa affinis , a hornet species distributed across Asia. Selling on behalf of my friend, a fellow nest collector. Collected recently from a tree in a suburban district of the New Territories, Hong Kong, after the nest was abandoned for unknown reasons. My friend actually climbed the tree to collect it, but unfortunately broke the bottom half envelope in the process. However, the break was quite even and the remaining top half envelope still looks neat, and shows the inside of the nest nicely on one side and from the bottom. A few branches and leaves appear to be fixed into the envelope as a result of the hornets building over them. T seem to be 3 or 4 combs (1 may be hidden by the envelope). The nest as it is now measures around 25cm (10 inches) in diameter and 28cm (11 inches) high. The colour may differ slightly from that shown in the photos due to differences in settings when photos were taken as well as the settings of your monitor, but I have tried to use the photos that match closest to the actual colour. Very nice, beautiful patterns which are quite different from most nests of North American or European species, and will make a great addition to any nest collection.
