Up for auction is a Magnificent Cup and Saucer. The cup and saucer were produced and hand painted at the Atelier Le Tallec for Connoisseurs, Royalty, and Tiffany & Co. The design on the set is called Black Shoulder. The inspiration for the design came from fanciful murals unearthed at the ruins of Pompeii. These murals, discovered in the late eighteenth century, included images of trees, birds, insects, and animals against black backgrounds. These Pompeian themes had a great influence on neoclassical French design, which is exemplified by the 1810 porcelain prototype for this pattern. The set is in mint condition, the cup measure 3.5" to the top of the handle and saucer 5" in diameter, the sets are the first version of Black Shoulder marked EE/AM, I have shown the marks on both the cup and saucer. The back of the saucer reads entirely hand painted by Le Tallec of Paris Made in France for Black Starr & Gorham. My informaton came from Keith and Thomas Waterbrook-Clyde's wonderful book "Atelier Le Tallec Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain" The cup and saucer are shown with other pieces in this pattern in their book. This auction is for one cup and saucer, t are 6 sets being auctioned-check for the others. Please eMail any questions. We accept cheques, money orders and Paypal.
