Hi up for auction is an Amtrak Locomotive marked on the side 489 - Tested and runs well - I do not see a makers mark anywhere on this piece , but I believe its aSUPER RARE ATHEARN AMTRAK PHASE III F7A SUPER POWER LOCOMOTIVE IN ROAD NUMBER 489 On the bottem there is a number 42005
A very nice Ebayer contacted me about this piece and here is what I have found outThis model was a limited release for Athearn; its was also incorrectly painted with Amtrak's Phase III scheme. No Amtrak F7A Locomotives wore this paint scheme..
EMD built a fleet of "special order" FL-9 "Dual-Mode" (Diesel + 3rd Rail DC Electric) Locomotives for the New Haven RR. After the inception of Amtrak, NH's fleet of FL-9s were divided among: Amtrak, Metro-North & CONDOT.
Amtrak performed an overhaul program on their FL-9s + applied a Phase III paint scheme at the New Haven Shops in Conn. By this time, Amtrak had long retired all of the EMD F-series locomotives.
EMD built the FL-9s with an elongated frame (about 10 feet), to house the additional switch-gear needed for 3rd Rail operations. Due to the additional weight of this locomotive, a 3-axle Flexi-coil truck was applied to the rear position. This lowered the "Axle-loading" to qualify for operations on NYC's bridges & viaducts. So THANK YOU to the kind soul ... read more
