On september 6, 1622, the heavily laden galleon of Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet grounded and broke up in a raging hurricane near the Florida Keys. More than one hundred and twenty persons perished and tons of gold,silver, and other precious cargo were lost to the sea.Most people are familiar with the famed shipwreck of the Atocha. But few know she had a sister ship that went down with her in the Florida keys. The Santa Margarita. Coins from this ship are far more rare because she had less of a bounty than the Atocha. This coin is a 4 Reales with a Potosi mint. Grade 3 that was struck during the reign of Philip III .The coins recovered from the Margarita and minted in the New World are usually irregular in shape and referred to as "Cobs" They were manufactured by slicing coinblanks fron the end of crudely cast bars of refined bullion. They were then clipped to the requisite weight,heated and hand hammered between crudely engraved dies. The rough surface and irregular circumference of the blanks prevented well defined strikes; consequently the legends are frequently missing or only partially shown.The Spanish authorities were unconcerned with the shape of the coins or visible dates. This coin was recovered from the sunken Galleon Santa Margarita, by Treasure Salvors,Inc. {Mel Fisher} I purchased this coin in Key West Feb.22,2000 the price of the coin alone was $995.00 I then had a Gold band added to the coin with 2 Dolphins so it can be worn on a chain. Total for the Coin and Gold= $1333.63 It also comes with a certificate of authenticity from Treasure Salvors, Inc. Personally signed by Lee fisher himself.{Mels son} Also Lee's wife, Kim Fisher has signed the bottom of the certificate.This coin is almost 400 YEARS OLD !!!!
