William Sessions was born February 27th, 1857, the son of John H. Sessions. He died on August 20th, 1920. Early in his lifetime, he worked in his father's trunk hardware business in Bristol, Ct. In 1876 they established a foundry to make iron castings. William subsequently founded the SESSIONS CLOCK COMPANY with his Uncle Albert in 1903 to continue the clock manufacturing business of the former E.N. Welch Clock Company. They were one of the largest makers of clocks in Connecticut history. This nice example of their clock-making product has been completely restored with gold-painted lion's heads on each end and attractive Grecian-style friezes (panels) on either side of the front of the case. Fluted columns add to the classic look of this clock. The porcelain dial is original to the clock and features colorful floral designs (see photograph), and the SESSIONS name. The eight-day brass movement runs well, keeping good time and chimes on the hours and once on each half-hour. PLUS, the most remarkable feature of this clock is the statue on the top of the case which portrays the Egyptian 'SPHINX'. Makers of these so-called "black mantle" clocks often offered buyers the option of adding a cast metal statue to be placed on top of the clock case. These statues were not attached to the cases.
