Attributed to Jose Arpa y Parea oil on canvas titled, `Portrait of Lady in White Manilla`. The painting has the artist`s name on the back of the canvas stretcher. Jose Arpa y Parea was born in Carmona, Spain in 1860 and was known as `The Colorist Painter` of figures and landscapes. He was best known in San Antonio where he brought a fresh approach to painting with his bright, sunlit local scenes. When he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville his reputation was such that the Spanish government sent four of his paintings as part of the 1893 World`s Columbian Expostion in Chicago. After twenty years of traveling in Spain, Mexico and the Southwest, Arpa settled in San Antonio in 1923 where he became the Director of the San Antonio Art School, where several San Antonio collectors accumulated large numbers of his works. His paintings and illustrations can be seen in the San Antonio Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston and many others. The painting is in fair condition with paint loss. Site: 24.5`H x 19.5`W; Frame: 28.5`H x 24`W. Circa - 20th C.
