AUDIE MURPHY PAM BULL HALSEY TO HELL AND BACK PREMIER 8 x 10 black and white glossy photo of Audie and Pamela Murphy with Fleet Admiral Bill ( Bull ) Halsey. They were attending the premier of "To Hell And Back" in 1955. Halsey was promoted to Fleet Admiral in December 1945, and retired from active duty in March 1947. In the meantime, he served as best man at Commodore Markey's wedding to Hollywood actress Myrna Loy at San Pedro, California in January 1946. He was involved in failed efforts to preserve his former flagship USS Enterprise (CV-6) as a memorial in New York in the late forties and fifties. Halsey died on August 20, 1959 on Fishers Island, NY[12] and was interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Murphy played himself in the 1955 film version of his book with the same title, To Hell and Back In an actual war, while a unit may participate in numerous battles, the actual personnel changes, as men are killed, injured, or rotated out of the line. In "To Hell and Back" the Hollywood pattern is broken and the characters suffer death and injury as they did in real life, until by the end of the film only Murphy is left of the original members of his unit. In the climactic scene, Murphy stands at attention while the ghostly images of his dead friends pass before his mind. This insistence on reality has often been attributed to Murphy and his desire to honor his fallen friends. The film grossed almost ten million dollars during its initial theatrical release, and at the time became Universal Studios's biggest hit of the studio's 43-year history. This movie held the record as the company's highest-grossing motion picture until 1975, when it was surpassed by Steven Spielbergs Terry Murphy, who played younger brother Joe Preston Murphy (at age four), is in fact Murphy's older son. Audie was reluctant to star in To Hell and Back , fearing it would appear he was cashing in on his war experience, so he suggested his role be played by Tony Curtis. The film was introduced by General Walter Bedell Smith, United States Army, Retired. During World War II, Smith had served as Chief of Staff to General Dwight D. Eisenhower.It seems that this might be General Walter Smith in the photo but it sure looks like Halsey to me. If I am wrong will someone please let me know. Any soldier or Marine who came into the hospital got the same treatment from her. She would walk the hallways with her clipboard in hand making sure her boys got to see the specialist they needed. If they didn't,watch out! Her boys weren't Medal of Honor recipients or movie stars like Audie, but that didn't matter to Pam. They had served their country. That was good enough for her. She never called a veteran by his first name. It was always "Mister.." Respect came with the job. "Nobody could cut through VA red tape faster than Mrs. Murphy," said veteran Stephen Sherman, speaking for thousands of veterans she befriended over the years. "Many times I watched her march a veteran who had been waiting more than a hour right into the doctor's office. She was even reprimanded a few times, but it didn't matter to Mrs. Murphy.
