1881 TicketOWENTON AND MONTEREY STAGE LINEFoster & Conover, Proprietors(Warren Foster & John Conover - see below)[Owen Co., Kentucky] 2-3/8 x 4-1/8" yellow medium-weight paper - with three punctures on the inner edge where it was once obviously bound in a booklet of tickets. Printed ticket #602 with facsimile printed script naming the proprietors. Dated August 31, 1881 with hand-inking and showing a hand-inked fare of $1.00 from Owenton to Monterey. Blank back. Owenton and Monterey are towns separated by about 10 miles in Owen County, KY. (Note: They are today on Route 127, which runs roughly N-S, not far from Elmer Davis Lake.) We weren't able to find out much about this stage line, but we did find the following entry in the 1881-2 Kentucky State Gazetteer and Business Directory, Vol. III indicating that there was a daily stage between Monterey and Owenton (our underlining): MONTEREYThis village is in Owen county, 10 miles from the county seat and 22 miles from Sparta, its shipping station by rail. Here is 1 mill, 1 church, I free school, tobacco, broom corn and livestock are shipped. Daily stage to Owenton ; fare $.75; to Sparta $1.75. Population 330. Daily mail. Wm. E. Hardin, postmaster.
