Very interesting Japanese military post card with printed frank, endorsed "Free" in manuscript at upper right, mailed soon after Hoten Camp, Mukden, Manchuria, China was liberated by American forces, with return address of Captain R. D. Dodson, F.A., U.S.A., a freed former Japanese Prisoner of War (P.O.W.), postmarked US Army Post Office APO 627 (Headquarters, 14th Air Force, Kunming, China), Aug 31 1945, circular US Army Base, Examiner 3363 censor making at lower left, addressed sender's sister, Mrs. J. Paul Anderson, Abilene, Texas USA; (reverse side) long message partially reading, "Hoten Camp, Mukden, Manchuria, Aug 25 1945, Dear Sister, Well, I am a free man again and still altogether , which is something to be thankful for. I am anxious to get home and see how everyone is getting along, as I have heard very little. I received one cable, undated, in Aug 1944, and some cards dated Sep 1944, from Jewel, which stated that everyone was well. Had heard nothing before or since. Give my best to Jack and my nieces and nephews (I don't know for sure how many, by now). Jerre must be a big boy by now, and I am going to do my best to help with giving him a good start in life. Hope to be home, at least back in the States, soon ... [signed] Thomas A. Dodson ..." Hoten Camp was opened on Jul 29 1943 with population of 1,170 U.S. Army and 100 Australian and British soldiers as prisoners. On Aug 20 1945 (possibly the day it was opened), just five days before this card was written, the camp population was 280 U.S. officers + 1,038 enlisted men, 176 British officers, 108 O.R.'s, 58 Dutch Officers + 7 O.R.'s and 4 civilians. Fine condition, minor soiling, very light horizontal crease at lower left edge. *** We have been in the postal history business since 1953 and are members of the Military Postal History Society, American Stamp Dealers Association, American Philatelic Society, National Stamp Dealers Association, Philatelic Traders Society (Great Britain), Canadian Stamp Dealers Association (Canada), International Federation of Stamp Dealers Associations, Collectors Club of New York and numerous other philatelic organizations.
