This five-string mandolin banjo is circa late 1800's, made in the USA with a spruce top and Honduras mahogany back, sides and fretboard. The x-braced top has a mandolin-like pickguard with a floral stylized inlay against a brown inlaid background and is bound with multicolored wood with a wood inlaid soundhole ring. The brand on the backbrace reads "Pat. May 3, 1887." The metal trapeze tailpiece reads "Daisy". Fretboard has four different shaped mother of pearl inlays. The banjo friction tuners are stamped "pat. May 1888". Inlaid in the headstock is an ivoroid disk with "August Pollman's Royal Mandoline Banjo" and the patented date of May 3, 1887. Very high quality materials and construction throughout. Overall length is 34 1/8 in., width is 10 3/8 in. at lower bout, and 3 9/16 in. depth at the side end block. Scale length is 23 in. Top has two grain cracks in the bass bout. Very good condition overall, unusually intact for an instrument this old and fragile. Original brown canvas case included but it is not intact. Professionally appraised market value between $800 and $1400.
