One of 3 last letters which I have, written from Hong Kong, (I might possibly sell one more) from the correspondence of the American employee of the foremost mid-19th century US China trading company Augustine Heard, Franklin Blake of Newtonville, Mass. Outstanding long letter-Blake speaks of his business voyages, the destruction of the forts at and the stationing of troops at Canton, visiting the newly opened city, life at Macao, company employees Gossett and Gay, gifts sent home, etc. Letter has a patch of discoloration caused by what appears to be a souvenir sent in the letter, but it is still easily readable, informative and entertaining. Please enlarge the images and read for yourself. Winning US bidder pays $3.00 S&H; foreign bidder slightly more. The Exploits of Captain Augustine Heard "And as to catch the gale Round veered the flapping sail, Death! was the helmsman's hail, - Death without quarter! - Midships with iron keel Struck we her ribs of steel, Down her black hulk did reel Through the dark water!" In this manner did Captain Augustine Heard at racing speed suddenly bring the "Emerald" about and send to their watery grave, with a howl of dismay, a shipload of pirates. Captain Heard would never confirm this story; nevertheless, it was often related by the captains of the early days and they believed it to be true. Another read more
