The garnet of centuries past embellished crowns, scepters, swords, shields, cherished boxes, ornate glassware and even regal cloaks. References can be noted dating to before the year 1100 AD in Prague alone. Long recognized as the "Mother Gem of Bohemia" mining of the precious gem was almost totally exhausted by the 1900's and todays market presents the garnets of Madagascar or futher points east. The original dark, irregular cut ones you will not find except in items displayed in museums or items preserved as an heirloom. One of such presents itself in. The very rare, extraordinary festoon necklace of the mid 1800's ~ lavishly embedded with over 100 rote cut Bohemian garnets in individual settings ~ is composed of three distinct tiers of 5 varied sizes and cuts of the precious gems. Attached by soldered links, the festoon measures 2.25" horizontally, 1" vertically at center, and arch is 1/4". It descends from two extraordinarily fine 580 (14K) gold linked sections of 10" which fasten at back with spring clasp. Originally the item had been a hair comb with a tiny swivel bar soldered to back. This had, at some point between its creation in the mid 1800's and the year of 1921, been converted to a necklace as related by the great granddaughter of the former owner.
