this is an outstanding original and genuine pickle castor 12 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/4 inches wide made by james w. tufts of boston sometime in the late 1800's (after the cival war) - james w. tufts was in business in boston from 1875 until 1915 when he retired. he is one of the most desireable makers of pickle castors by collectors today. the item is very tarnished but has no dents or damage at all and has it's original tongs and jar. the beautiful blue glass jar is enameled with flowers and is in mint condition - no chips, cracks, or hairlines. the enamel on the jar is not only perfect but was done by a true artist. underneath and on the bottom of the metal frame it clearly reads as follows - James W. Tufts, Boston, small T in double diamond mark (very small), warranted, quadruple plate, 3386 - this is all just as clear and easy to read as can be with absolutely no wear at all. dimensions of jar are - top 2 3/4 inches, middle at widest point 3 1/4 inches, bottom 2 inches, and height 4 1/2 inches. metal lid has ruffling inside - that's the way it was made - it also has in very small print on the side - sterling204A. just a magnificent and gorgeous piece in superb condition (except for tarnishing noted above, which is consistent for a piece this old). you'll go a long time before you find another castor this nice in it's original read more
