SIZE:Length - 4.3" (10.9 cm) / Width - 2.25" (5.7 cm)Weight - A beautiful example of a mid Renaissance bronze portrayal of Christ on the cross. This piece is hollow cast (at the back of the body) with solid arms, legs, and head. A small bronze peg can be seen protruding from the back of his head for attachment to the cross. The sculpture is missing the lower arms and feet and Christ's nose has become slightly flattened at the tip. The surface bronze has developed an many-layered deep and rich patina over the past 400 years, as you can see from the photographs. There is some light encrustation in the hollow back and in some of the crevices of the small details (please see photos). This example was probably made in one of the 16th century German states, judging from the artistic style and depiction of Christ (or possibly in France). This fragment is in good condition, as seen in the photographs and described above. There are many reproductions of these early Christ bronzes, however this piece is absolutely authentic, dating to the 16th century, and guaranteed to be of the period. It was purchased from a fine old estate
