This is a very rare authentic 19 th century two-flue whaling harpoon that has been severely distorted. It represents what might happen when a whale was harpooned and fought, rolling and twisting, towing a fully loaded whalebat through the water. Harpoons were made of wrought iron due to the property of malleability needed to withstand this type of distortion (they were never made of steel). For comparison, a similar harpoon actually twisted by a whale is shown on page 6 of my book, “Harpoons and Other Whalecraft.” The harpoon is clearly marked J.B.M., for Joseph B. Morse, a prominent blacksmith working in New Bedford in 1852. He then apparently moved to Fairhaven , across the Acushnet River from New Bedford . He died in Fairhaven on Dec. 22, 1858 at the age of 50. I assume that this harpoon was not twisted by a whale because there are no markings to identify the whale ship nor whaleboat, always present when a harpoon was selected for use due to the time honored code, “Craft claims the whale.” I have no knowledge of how it became twisted, who twisted it, why it was twisted or when and where. The socket, shaft, JBM marking and forge welding marks are all correct. Please note: Only the harpoon is for sale – any other items that may appear in the photos are not included in this sale. We only ship on Mondays; the first Monday after payment is received. I accept only PayPal for payment. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you for looking and Greasy Luck in your bidding.
