An authentic Hopi traditional hand carved Priest Killer Kachina by noted Hopi carver Shirley Adams of the village of Polacca on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. This is Yo-we. The kachina commemorates the Great Pueblo Revolt agains the Spanish in the late 17th century. The local priests had oppressed the Hopi, abused their women and the sold some of their children into the slave market in Mexico City to raise funds for a mission bell. At the start of the revolt the Priest Killer kachinas suddenly arrived and killed the mission priests, beheaded them and threw their bodies off the mesa. To this day the 17th Century mission church has not been rebuilt and Yo-we remains in some dances as a reminder of brave resistenace to oppression. This kachina is fairly scarce and hard to find This one has remarkable detail provided by this master carver. The entire kachina is carved from local cotton wood root. We will allow a two week return by the buyer if they are not satisfied. The kachina stands approximately 10 1/2 inch high by 3 inches wide. Insurance is included in the shipping cost.
