Authentic John F. Kennedy 1960 PT-109 Presidential Campaign Tie Clasp: Designed by Jolle DESCRIPTION This is an authentic 1960 Democratic presidential campaign pin in the form of a PT-109 tie clasp marked "Kennedy 60" on the starboard side of the bow of the boat. The USS PT-109 was a motor torpedo boat last commanded by Lieutenant (Junior Grade) (LTJG) John F. Kennedy (later President of the United States ) in the Pacific Theater during World War II. LTJG Kennedy's actions to save his surviving crew after the sinking of the PT-109 by the Japanese destroyer, Amagiri, on August 2, 1943, in the Solomon Islands made him a war hero and proved instrumental in advancing his political career in later years. Robert Ballard, who first discovered and filmed the wreck of the Titanic , also found the sunken wreck of the PT-109 in 2002. The PT-109 tie clasp was designed by Hess-Appel Inc. of New York (mark: Jolle) founded by Lester Hess and Jack Appel in 1943. The brass-colored tie clasp shows the profile of the PT-109 underway complete down to starboard torpedo tube, the 20 mm cannon aft, and the wake caused by the boat's high-speed progress through the water. The political logo "Kennedy 60" is highlighted in black. On the reverse side, the designer's mark "JOLLE" is stamped on the back of the clasp. The tie clasp is 1 ¾" long and 3/8" wide. read more
