Up for bids is this EXTREMELY RARE authentic One Reale cob coin recovered off of the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Senora De Atocha which sank in a hurricane in 1622 off the Florida Keys. This is NOT a replica but the real deal! What makes this One Reale coin even more rare is that it is from the Mexico Mint. Of over 200,000 coins recovered from the Atocha fewer than 1% are one reale denominations ( less than 200 ). When you take into account that this was also, from the Mexico Mint it brings it down to fewer than .5% ( or 100 known to exist ...only 2 specimens per state in the U.S.) To top it off it is a grade one! Perfectly round planchett , perfectly centered and with a hard strike. Some evidence exists that these one reale Atocha coins were produced as presentation pieces. The coin comes with its original sealed, photo-certificate of authenticity and 2x2 card. Assayer is "F' minted between 1607-1617. If you send this particular coin's information to the Mel Fisher Museum in Key West they will tell you the coins appraisel value is $4,800.00 or what they would sell it for ( if they had one ) ! I hate to see this go and have brought it out of a bank safety deposit box to sell, but my loss is your gain. A very low starting bid. When is the last time you saw one of these for sale on e-bay? If it doesn't sell I will knoiw that I should hold onto it. The coin comes in a large custom portfolio w/ a picture of the Atocha imprinted on the cover and holds and protects both the coin and its certificate. The portfolio allows to view both sides of the coin without removing it. Also, included with the coin is a signed copy of Carol Tedesco's book Treasure Coins of the Nuestra Senora De Atocha & the Santa Margarita. On page 17 she shows a picture of a similiar Atocha one reale ( although not as good of condition ) and describes it as "extremely rare". On page 3 of her book she describes that one reales recovered from either the Atocha and Santa Margarita ( from any mint ) are "exceedingly rare". Mexico Mint adds to the rarity. A great and seldom chance to add this Atocha coin to your collection. Most Atocha coin collections are missing this one reale denomination and even ones that do, do not have one in this condition! "Buy It Now" option on this auction is half of coin's real value .If you are trying to complete a collection, these one reales come up for auction on ebay about one every 10 or so years so don't miss this chance. If it doen't sell, it goes back into the bank safety security box or maybe I'll even donate it to the Mel Fisher Museum in Key West for display.
