This auction is for an authentic Moche V fineline stirrup vessel, ca. 550 - 700 AD, measuring 8 inches tall x 5 inches wide. The vessel is from San Jose de Moro in the lower Jequetepeque valley of northern Peru . The painted design consists of two sets of females in crescent boats with rays emanating from all parts of their bodies. The crescent boats are separated by sea anemones with faces and the stirrup is decorated with multiple weapon bundles. There is some minor roughness to the spout, two small chips to the base and stabilized cracks at the bottom of the stirrup, but otherwise, the vessel is in excellent condition with minimal paint loss. There are appropriate mineral deposits on all surfaces and the microscopic wear is consistent with age. While there are many fineline vessels in the museums of the world, just a small percentage of these are Moro style vessels. This particular vessel is most likely from the workshop of the pendant nose painter. While his facial features are like those described by Donnan as work of the pendant nose painter, and unlike the facial features of any other painter, it is the design of the weapon bundles on the stirrup that identifies the artist. The pendant nose painter has weapon bundles with prominent sling stones evenly spaced between the shafts of the spears and the handle of the mace. See Moche Fineline Painting from San Jose de Moro, p185 for confirmation. This vessel has been in my personal collection for several years. Ex Traugott, Osprey, Florida ; Espinoza, Toronto , Canada , it was imported from Brazil into Canada in the early 80's. The vessel comes with a written lifetime guarantee of authenticity and may be returned for any reason within 14 days. Vessel will be shipped by insured USPS Priority mail for exact cost to US LOCATIONS ONLY . Thanks for taking the time to look at my item and please feel free to email with any questions.
