dust & ashes publications fine used & rare theological book auctions Very rare autograph of Josiah Cotton, pioneer missionary to the Indians of Massachusetts. He was son of the eminent puritan, John Cotton, and nephew to Cotton Mather. The present was issued as part of his duties as Justice of Plymouth, but his chief employment was the preaching of the Gospel to the natives. Even as a layman, he was a pioneer among them, compiling a grammar which exists in MSs at the Massachusetts Historical Society, preaching an average of Sundays per year and even translating a sermon by his uncle, Cotton Mather, into the vernacular. All in all, he preached among them for 39 years! Handsome land document deeding a piece of Land from Richard Bawker to his son, Richard also, signed by several Plymouth officials and dating to 1754.
