AUTOGRAPH OF PRESIDENT JAMES MONROE on a September 18, 1817 Guernsey County, Ohio land grant. Also signed by Commissioner of the General Land Office, Josiah Meigs.Grant is on parchment. Measures 8-7/8 by 12-3/4". Two vertical folds and two light horizontal folds. The text is printed, with the pertinent information written in black ink. The reverse has the usual notations from the recorder.The document is accompanied by a letter of inquiry dated Dec. 18, 1944, to the recorder at that time, with his reply on the back, which includes a map of the land referenced in the original grant. The letter is from a former owner of the land grant. The reply states that the land is in Cambridge Township, Gurensey County.The original document reads: James Monroe President of the United States of America TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, GREETING: Know ye, that John Slats in his own right & as assignee of Wm.
