Large public libraries subscribe to periodicals for their patron's use, and - typically - when several issues have accumulated they are sent to the bindery to be bound together into one volume using buckram material over hardcovers. This procedure keeps soft-covered items like magazines in very good condition, especially when they cannot be borrowed for use outside of the library. Also, when a library subscribed to a certain magazine, it received a specially printed copy with page numbers that were consecutive from month to month. For example, this book offered here for sale begins with January 5, 1922 (page 1) and concludes with March 30, 1922 at page 746. Page numbers before and after these are part of other bound issues. Semi-annually, an index for the year is included so readers can search articles and topics by key words and then go to the corresponding page quite easily. This is one of those volumes, with the "index to volume XLVI". I should have taken more photos, but would be happy to provide more upon request. It's a fascinating book to thumb through, and even more so when you're a car buff and enjoy seeing how the old models were put together, how the industry ran so long ago, and just about any topic you'd have an interest in.
