LANCASTER MK.II Desktop Model Plane After the MK I was completed, the work for the Lancaster MK II started. And in November 26, 1941, the first prototype of Mk II flew. It was produced by Armstrong Whitworth. And the work was started in March 1942. T was a delay in the appearance of the Lancaster MK II; this was when the Armstrong Whitworth was bombed in June 1942. The Lancaster MK II was the only model of the Lancaster 's that was not operated by the Rolls Royce Merlin engines. The aircraft was using Bristol Hercules radial air cooled engines. The purpose of this was to have a replacement for Merlin engines in case they failed. In October 1942, the Lancaster MK II entered the service. The risk to the Merlin engines was already starting to diminish during that time. In 1943, an initial test for the aircraft happened and it showed one serious limitation of the aircraft and that is low service ceiling. T was a test that took place in January for the aircraft. Three Lancasters, two MK II and a MK I were put to the test. The MK I reached an altitude of 22,000 feet while the MK II only reached 18,400 and 14,000 feet. The Lancaster MK II was issued to the No.115 Squadron after the test. T was another problem with the MK II. It could only carry 14,000 lbs. of bomb compared to MK I that could carry about 18,000 lbs. of it. The Lancaster MK II had the same performance as the Merlin XX. In the end of 1943, the aircraft was put out of service.
