Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock reprint A Rare Opportunity- Check out these offerings. This unique combination of high quality, old reprints and fantastic provenance will not be repeated. Collect old prints with the Muller provenance and delve into the exotic world of old Japan. How were these prints done? These beautiful woodblock reprints were done exactly as the originals. An artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. These old reprints are sought after for their meticulous attention to detail and color, rivaling the originals. Unlike the brighter, souvenir prints seen on the market these fine reprints show the attention to detail and careful color choices intended to exactly replicate the old originals. Detail of this Print Awabe Divers Rare reprint from the studio of Hashiguchi Goyo Hashiguchi Goyo Reprints- Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e prints from the golden age of the print period. In 1920, much of Goyo's artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints from the golden age of ukiyo-e. Each print was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo rectangular seal (see example below). Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo's studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim. Original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and extremely rare to find. This fantastic group of triptychs offered for sale this evening is an especially rare group of woodblock prints. These subjects are just not found often on the market. This fantastic triptych design is most definitely one of the great masterworks of ukiyo-e and one of the finest Japanese art designs of all time. Five beautiful women on a rocky embankment at the water diving for clams in search of pearls. In the center panel, a young beauty combing her hair, a tie-dyed kimono over her shoulders. Falling away from her breasts, a little boy suckling at her breast. Utamaro's design is classic in his rendition of women.
