HI-FI HEAVEN: Bassist James Leary – JAMES - Vital 003 from Vacuum Tube Logic (David Manley) – 2LPs – ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! An audiophile set of great musicianship and energy, recorded super well, and among the first from mastermind Manley at VTL. David Manley has been in the audiophile game a long time. Pioneering huge tube designs in amplifiers, he also has done a slew of very fine recordings, utilizing his own built-from-the-ground-up studio, and, of course, using his own tube electronics throughout the audio chain. (Of particular note are his Manley "Gold Reference" Stereo Condenser microphones, which remind me sonically of the electrostatic designs of speaker-maker Robert Fulton, years ago. Tasty mics, capable of incredibly defined captures.) That said, this release of bassist James Leary is something else again, as it hosts four other bassists (along with piano and drums) and delivers such fine sound, you can picture the vibrating strings in your listening room. Great selections are BEMSHA SWING, BALLAD FOR M, QUIET FIRE, I’M WALKIN’, L’EAR, BASS-ED (fabulous!), and SO FAR SO GOOD, among others.
