William Edmondstoune Aytoun: "Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems" With Illustrations by Joseph Neal Paton and Waller H. Paton. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons. 1863, 268 pages. 7 1/2" X 9 3/4." The main content (pages 1 - 194) are eight rhymed poems that tell stories about great Scottish heroes - their lives and deaths, These are the "lays" that celebrate the courage and nobility of these cavaliers like Montrose and Bruce. (The other poems are shorter and on various subjects like John Milton in his blind old age.). Professor Aytoun, a famous Scottish scholar, introduces each cavalier. Following each poem he gives additional information about each hero's life. There are 69 illustrations, most of them depicting herois battles fought by cavaliers in armor. Seven of them are full-page or two-thirds of a page. Twelve of them are one-half page in size. At the front of the book is a detailed list of the 69 illustrations and the names of the engravers. (Dalziel is the main engraver named.) The front and rear boards are bound itentically. Both are dark green pebbled leather with two double gilt lines framing two different gilt designs within the frame - see scan one.
