Coatlalpanec style from the city states of the Atlixco area of the western plain of the state of Puebla. Dates to 1400-1521 A.D. The style is typified by the use of the red and "graphite" slips leaving the ornamentation of the monkey heads plain to suggest that the spirit force of the vessel's clay actually materializes as the creature. Monkeys were a popular form of design as they were evocative of games, humor, and other palace activities surrounding royal feasts. Excellent condition. Picture of additional ceramic vessels for comparison only.
