Aztec Seated Figure, Pre-Columbian Mexico Click on these links to view larger photos: 1 -2 -3 -4 An interesting terra cotta seated figure from the ancient Aztec culture of Pre-Columbian Mexico, circa 1250 A.D. - 1521 A.D. - Late Post Classic Period. Measuring just under 4" tall by about 2 1/4" wide, this figure depicts a seated male with head dress, large ear spools and an ornate necklace with large pendant. Some scholars suggest that the attire is similar to that worn by the ruler, and the seated posture is typically indicative of power/authority. T are perforations on each side of the middle of the figure, and the back is somewhat concave. It has been suggested that figures such as these may have been secured/tied to lengths of stick to be held aloft by spectators viewing ceremonies or processions. Condition: Intact overall with minor ancient losses to the top of the headdress and the figure's right side. Minor chipping and abrasions, and Mineral and sediment deposits overall.
