Burlon Bart Craig (B. B. Craig) (1914 âe" 2002) is credited by many with single-handedly keeping the traditions of Catawba Valley Pottery alive and serving as a bridge between the potters of the early 1900s and the contemporary Catawba potters of today (for example see Turners and Burners by Terry Zug). Burlon dug and cleaned his own clays by hand, turned on a foot-powered wheel, and used a wood-fired kiln. He was know for his generosity and helped many other potters learn the craft. Burlon Craig is widely recognized for his talents. Hisworks can be found in many museums, including the Smithsonian's permanent collections. Burlonreceived the prestigious National Folk Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1984. In 2003, Charlotte's Mint Museum of Art mounted a major exhibition, "Burlon Craig and His Legacy."
The floor vase up for bid was made some time in the 1980s to early 1990s and is a classic shape of Burlon's. It is a nice folksy piece with 4-color swirl of emerald green, cobalt blue, creamy white, mixed with the brown color of the clay (and thus called 4-color). The vase has 4 handles with a raised middle ridge on each. The handle area of the vase has two incised sine waves enclosed in three incised lines. T is a clear glassy glaze that gives the vase an attractive glossy finish (which caused many reflections in the photos and gives the appearance of light brown areas towards the bottom of the vase caused by reflections of the decking). The vase stands a huge 17 ¼ inches high by 10 ½ inches wide. I am happy to report that the condition of the vase is excellent with no damage of any kind - no chips, no hairlines, no nicks, and no repairs. The glossy finish has some small glaze pops and minor imperfections that characterize Burlon Craigâe(tm)s work. Burlon used a start-to-finish method and a wood-fired kiln, which cause minor imperfections in Burlon's work. The floor vase is signed on the bottom B.B. Craig, Vale N. C. The B.B. Craig floor vase is offered with no reserve and very low starting bid. Shipping charges will be calculated at the end of the auction based on actual shipping costs plus the cost of insurance. Local bidders can arrange for pick-up and save on shipping charges. I will email the winner after the auction. Good luck with bidding! Please note: Lately, bidding on eBay has become somewhat irrational. Tfore, I recommend that if you are interested in this vase you bid early because I will stop the auction for lack of interest.
