Also, lending their hand on this Cincinnati Official Ball are signatures of Hall of Fame New York Yankee Bill Dickey (catcher-World Series) and Yankee Bob Meusel (World Series, 1 of 2 to hit for cycle 3 times) who hit behind Ruth & Gehrig. Also, signatures of Babe Herman (Brooklyn Robins, Cincinnati Reds), Glenn Wright (Brooklyn Robins, Pittsburg Pirates), Rip Russell (Chicago Cubs), Lloyd Brown (Washington Senators), Gilly Campbell (Cincinnati Reds) etc; 12 signatures in all. George Herman Ruth, Jr. ( February 6 , 1895 - August 16 , 1948 ), also known as " Babe ", " The Great Bambino ", " The Sultan of Swat ", " The King of Crash " and " The Colossus of Clout ", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914 -1935 . He is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players in history. Many polls place him as the number one player of all time. William Malcolm Dickey ( June 5 , 1907 - November 12 , 1993 ) was a professional baseball player and manager . One of the most famous catchers in Major League history, he played his entire career with the New York Yankees , with whom he appeared in eight World Series and won seven World Series championships.Dickey was born in Bastrop, Louisiana . He broke into the Majors in 1928 and played his first full season in 1929 . It was his first of ten seasons out of eleven with a .300+ batting average . Although his offensive production was overshadowed by Yankees greats Babe Ruth , Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio , in the late 1930s Dickey posted some of the finest offensive seasons ever by a catcher, hitting over 20 home runs with 100 RBI in four consecutive seasons ( 1936 - 1939 ). His 1936 batting average of .362 is the highest single-season average ever recorded by a catcher (tied with Mike Piazza of L.A. Dodgers in 1997). Robert William Meusel ( July 19 , 1896 - November 28 , 1977 ) was an American left and right fielder in Major League Baseball who played eleven seasons from 1920 to 1930 , all but the last for the New York Yankees . He was best known as a member of the Yankees championship teams of the 1920s, nicknamed the " Murderers' Row ", during which time the team won its first six American League pennants and first three World Series titles.Meusel, noted for his strong throwing arm in the outfield, batted fifth behind Baseball Hall of Famers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig .[1] In 1925 he joined Ruth in becoming the second Yankee to lead the AL in either home runs (33), runs batted in (138) or extra base hits (79). Nicknamed "Long Bob" because of his 6 foot , 3 inch (1.91 m ) stature, Meusel batted .313 or better in seven of his first eight seasons, finishing with a .309 career average; his 1,005 RBI during the 1920s were the fourth most by any major leaguer, and trailed only Harry Heilmann 's total of 1,131 among AL right-handed hitters.
