Very Scarce.A nice First Edition copy of this fascinating and very scarce book. This thick book contains several essays and many illustrations throughout. Published more than 40 years ago, this book is now out-of-print and very scarce, as comparable copies sell for at least $65 or more. Such a nice copy is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From the Dust Jacket: "Scientists in recent years have come to recognize the importance of the baboon in medical research. More than most laboratory animals, the baboon is similar to man in physiological, psychological, and even social responses. With the exception of two canine teeth, his dental structure is almost identical with man's. His size, which is larger than that of most other experimental animals, facilitates gross examination. Moreover, he is readily available, maintainable in captivity, and costs a third as much as the chimpanzee. To date, experiments using the baboon have afforded data on man's problems in heart disease, circulatory troubles, cancer, infectious diseases, and mental health."In order to exchange information and to encourage scientists in other disciplines to consider employing the baboon for scientific research, some two hundred scientists - physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and anthropologists - met in San Antonio in the fall of 1963 for the First International Symposium on the Baboon in Medical Research. This symposium was sponsored by the Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, an organization which has been a leader in the use of the baboon, maintaining two captive baboon colonies (one at San Antonio and the other at Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa)."This volume presents papers read at the Symposium, as well as the stimulating discussions which took place there. The varied facets of the experimental use of the baboon were explored by many scientists who are internationally renowned pioneers in their respective fields.
