It's hard for an Irishman to consider the possibility that t is a full lead-crystal product out t that can compete with his own Waterford, Tyrone, Cavan or Galway crystal stemware. But t is ... both as to a venerable past and modern art and elegance. Baccarat takes its name from the town in France w the factory was first established in 1764 to fire glass to grace the tables of Archbishops and Princes. Since that time the list of noble patrons includes the rulers of France, Russia, Japan and the United States. Most of us would probably not want to be associated with this rogues' gallery in anything other than their taste and refinement (and budget?) w it comes to art. The Barrarat name is second to none, with the possible exception of (old) Waterford ... at auction is a single Champagne bowl in the famous Mesena cut . The shape, weight, elegance and feel of this glass can only be fully appreciated in the hand. The long cut of the stem and bowl seem to sweep in one continuous line as if the glass were blown from one whole molten piece. The shape of this glass, very different to the flute, allows the champagne to explode in the nose and mouth; this is to quaff not to sip.
