BAILEY & CO. of Chestnut Street, PHILADELPHIA, made this handsome footed COIN SILVER tray. The firm was in existence under this name from 1848 to 1878, when it became the famed Bailey, Banks & Biddle. The company was particularly proud of their use of British quality -- 925 -- sterling, and in addition to the Bailey & Co. stamp (see below), they added a strip of marks (again, see below) including a lion passant, an S, and a shield to indicate the higher quality. T are also two stamps of a lion passant, just to make sure the point was made . . . A full description of the firm and its history is in Rainwater & Redfield's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers; now for a full description of the tray. A subtle engine-turned design in a 3/4" band frames a beautiful engraving that fills the center. The raised rim has a delicate band of engraving just inside the highly raised beaded border. The three feet are marvelous -- please see the close-up, below. The beading motif is repeated in and around finely patterned leaves. The tray is 9 7/8" in diameter and is 1" high, not including the beaded rim. The feet are 7/16" wide at the bottom (and 1/4" high), opening up to 1 7/8" at their widest point. The tray weighs 15.1 troy oz on my digital scale. Apart from some surface scratches, the tray is in excellent condition; it sits flat, with no rocking at all. The silver has a deep gleam, and the design is still captivating, 150 years or so after it was created. Imagine this tray beneath a crystal decanter filled with sherry, on a deeply polished buffet, with a newspaper bearing news of the Civil War beside it . . .
