BAILEY TOOL CO JACK PLANE, NAME CAST IN LEVER CAP
This is a jack plane made by the Bailey Tool Co of Woonsocket, RI during the period 1872 to 1879. This Bailey is not the Leonard Bailey associated with Stanley Rule & Level although Leonard Bailey did perhaps work in this Seldon Bailey owned company in the 1878 time frame. Bailey Tool Co eventually sold out to Stanley Tool Co. and Leonard Bailey eventually went back to Stanley. The whole arrangement is very complicated and would require more space than I have and probably bore you to boot. If you want this plane I'm sure you know the story better than I do. Bailey Tool Co adopted the name "DEFIANCE" and used a trademark featuring a battle-ax. A short run of bench planes, like this one, were produced with the name "BAILEY TOOL CO" cast into the lever cap. These planes were probably early and produced prior to 1875. This plane is 13" long and the cutter is 2" wide. Markings on the plane are: On the lever cap is cast "BAILEY TOOL CO", on the brass adjustment screw is cast "PATENTED AUG. 3, 1875", and on the cutter cap is cast "DEFIANCE PATD APR. 23, 1867 ". This plane has the beech handle and knob which Seldon Bailey used although it could be upgraded to rosewood at an extra cost. Everything on this plane is proper and everything works as it should. No broken parts, cracks, chips, etc. Japanning on the body is about 85%. These planes are very scarce and this one is very nice. You will hunt a significant length of time (possibly forever) to find a better one. If you enjoy patented, scarce planes you will like this one. My E-Bay philosophy is simple, you are the customer and you decide how you want to handle the deal. I will go along with most anything as long as it is not too outrageous and you keep me informed. If it will be a few days before you get payment to me, no problem, just let me know so I will not worry about it being lost. I do not have any hard and fast time lines on what happens when. Normally I will get the package to the PO the day after I receive payment. If for some reason that will be delayed, I will let you know. As usual, you pay the shipping, insurance extra if desired. I personally recommend insurance if the item cost more than around $50, but you decide. On most items I sell, I try to estimate the postage cost by USPS Priority Mail (which is my shipping method) and include that up front so you know exactly what the cost of the item will be. I'm usually within a couple of dollars of the correct cost depending on your zip code. Unless it is too large or heavy I ship everything by priority mail. Never any crazy handling fees or ridiculous reserves. PayPal, money orders or checks accepted. Please allow a few days for checks if it is an expensive item. On some items I ship right away. So far all (well, most) of my dealings have been with nice, honest people. (As I would expect) . I always leave feedback up front, right after you have paid. Some vendors never leave feedback first, they wait till you have left it, that way if you leave bad feedback they can retaliate. I have talked with E-bay about this problem but they always duck the issue. Anyway, I always leave feedback first because I know t will be no problem with my items (or on the rare occasion t is, I will immediately resolve the problem). My satisfaction policy is also very simple, you are the customer and you decide if you want the item. Satisfaction guaranteed, no exception Purchase may be returned for any reason or no reason within a week in original condition for a full refund. If it is something I did or failed to do I will also refund the postage. If you just changed your mind or found another one down the street, cheaper or better. I still accept returns except you should pay the postage.
