Baleen Basket from Pt. Hope , Alaska This very nice Baleen basket of dark baleen with a design in light baleen, was created by Andrew Tooyak, Sr., a basket maker from Pt. Hope, Alaska . This basket is 3 ¾ inches in diameter and 4 inches to the top of the swan shaped finial. The baleen is well prepared for weaving; the strips are of consistent size throughout the basket. The close-stitch, narrow weft weave is tight, consistent, and even throughout. The sides rise symmetrically from the base to the crown. The lid fits snugly onto the body of the basket and has a layer that is crowned as it moves towards the center. The light baleen used in the pattern around the edge of the lid and evenly spread throughout the basket enhances the visual appeal of the basket. The finial is a graceful swan made of ivory with its head back along one wing. T is what appears to be a small cavity in the body of the swan with a drop of ink which emphasizes it. This should not affect either the structure or appearance of the ivory carving. The starter piece is ivory as well. It is signed by the artist on the bottom of the lid. It was purchased in 1985 from the artist. NOTE: Native Alaskan Handicraft NOTE: Ships to United States addresses only PAYMENT: PayPal SHIPPING: U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Insured
