Click to learn more. Item Description Up for Auction is a genuine Whale Baleen Basket! This is a Spectacular Baleen Basket made by Alaskan Native Hurbert Koonuk! Only the Alaska Natives can harvest the whale and the walrus. They use the by-products for their excellent works of art! This basket is one of the finest pieces you will find of Baleen Basketry. The craftsmanship of this basket is amazing. The weave is very tight and even. T is virtually no movement when the basket is compressed. The lid fits the basket very snugly. The basket measures 2 ¾ inches high, not including the ivory Polar Bear and Seal finial. The basket measures 4 inches in diameter. An exquisitely carved ivory Polar Bear and Seal adorn the top of the lid. The ivory is darker on one side indicating that it came from the outer edge of the walrus tusk. Details of the bearâe(tm)s face and claws have been hand painted. The basket is in excellent, near-mint condition, with only a few tiny nicks. Please see the photographs for details.
