Ball Black NY Sterling Silver Mythology Water Pitcher Greek Mythological Figures ~ Dyonisis / Bacchus ~ c1865 Ball, Black & Company, New York, NY. They were a short lived company, being the successors to Ball Tompkins & Black in 1851, and succeeded by Black, Starr and Frost, Ltd in 1876. That said, high quality items such as this wine or water pitcher are extremely rare, and difficult to find in good condition. This piece stands 36cms (14.17") tall and weighs a hefty 1669gms (or 59oz or 3lbs 11oz). It is spectacular - please study the pics although they probably don't do justice to this incredible piece of silver. The handle has a cast of a Greek or Roman god - I don't know which one (Zeus, Jupiter, Apollo maybe?) with rosettes on either side above delicate engraving and a fan shape w it meets the body. Around the neck of the pitcher are four rectangular panels, each embossed with a different image, but all including vine leaves. Three have musical instruments, the front panel a pair of bearded Bacchanalian heads, suggesting maybe that this piece was made to pour wine, not water. Beneath these panels is a geometric Greek key and beaded edge, above a fantastic 360° frieze incorporating other mythological figures such as the goat legged Pan or Satyr type creatures, musicians, cherubs, and a goat drawn chariot carrying Dionysus himself (or Roman Bacchus, god of wine and intoxication). On the front is a large shield shaped cartouche - no engraving or signs of removal). It has a good sized circular foot 13cms (5.11"), clearly marked on the underside a shown. T is a little age wear, and a few insignificant dings to note - no other condition issues, repairs or damage. The embossed images and decoration is all crisp, and shows very little wear, although being 160 years old t is some wear on the high points and finer features. Doesn't matter though - its a fine, rare and early piece of American sterling silver. Please study the pictures, and email me with any questions. This piece sold first time round for $5300, but was returned to me because of an apparent monogram removal. I couldnt see any sign of a monogram or other engraving, but gave the buyer the benefit of the doubt. Please study the pics - t is one of the cartouche in the listing.
