BRIEF HISTORY OF BALL JARS Ball began making fruit jars in 1885 in Buffalo, New York. About 1888 they moved to Muncie, Indiana and starting manufacturing what is known as the “Mason’s Patent Nov. 30 th , 1858” jars shortly after the plant opened. This date does not indicate that the jars were made in 1858, but refers to the patent on the screw type closure of the jar. Ball written in a script style first appeared on jars made in 1888 and 1889. Some had underscores, while others did not.
